Statement from the Medical Board Our Lady's Hospital for Sick Children

Dublin, Ireland - March 21st, 2003 - The Medical Board at Our Lady’s Hospital for Sick Children, which comprises all of the consultant medical and surgical staff at the hospital, wish to document their support for The New Crumlin Hospital Group, which consist of parents who are lobbying for the complete redevelopment of the hospital and the recently published Pollock Report.

The New Crumlin Hospital Group have highlighted major deficiencies in the original structure at Our Lady’s Hospital for Sick Children in Crumlin. The Medical Board accepts the Group’s view that the conditions for a lot of children and parents attending the hospital are far from adequate and must be addressed as an urgent priority.,

The Medical Board also endorses the findings of the Pollock Report, which was commissioned by The New Crumlin Hospital Group and which documents the marked infrastructure deficiencies at the hospital.

Many members of the Medical Board have in the past tried to highlight the unacceptable conditions which exist in the hospital, which has received little government investment in the fifty years since it was established.

The Medical Board has noted the acknowledgement from the Minister for Health and Children that many of the buildings within the hospital, which are over fifty years old, have not been upgraded to any significant degree over that period and his acknowledgement of the need for the complete redevelopment of the facilities at Our Lady’s Hospital. The Medical Board at the hospital now calls on all involved, including the Department of Health and Children, the Eastern Regional Health Authority, and Board of Management of Our Lady’s Hospital for Sick Children to expedite the development of the hospital as quickly as possible.

The Medical Board believes that all of these parties have an obligation to ensure that children do not continue to be cared for in the medium to long term under the unacceptable conditions that now pertain.

Finally, we would like to thank the parents for their acknowledgement of the commitment shown by all members of the hospital staff towards the care of sick children, despite the hospital’s marked structural deficiencies.
