Group Welcomes Timetable for Crumlin Hospital

Dublin, Ireland - October 1st, 2003 - The New Crumlin Hospital Group, which represents parents lobbying for the complete redevelopment of Our Lady's Hospital for Sick Children in Crumlin, has today welcomed the issuing of a timetable by Mr Micheal Martin, T.D., Minister for Health and Children which maps out the schedule for the complete redevelopment of the hospital.

The timetable was presented at a meeting yesterday (30th Sept) between the Minister for Health and Children, Senior Department Officials and representatives from The New Crumlin Hospital Group.

During the meeting the Minister confirmed that the Design Brief for the hospital would be completed by this December and the Outline Control Development Plan would be completed by Mid-2004. According to the timetable construction on site will start in 2007 and continue up to 2010.

While the Group expressed its concern over the length of time the redevelopment would take and highlighted that 2007, the year construction is scheduled to start, is a long way off for sick children, the Minister agreed that opportunities to fast-track the development and speed up the process could be reviewed as Department Officials engage more closely with the hospital executives and medical staff.

Karl Anderson, Chairman of the New Crumlin Hospital Group said that the timetable was the first very important step on the road towards alleviating the unacceptable conditions that exist at the hospital.

"We are encouraged by the Minister's reassurances that the complete redevelopment of the hospital is a priority within his Department and that he had signalled the urgency for its redevelopment to his colleagues at Cabinet level.

"The Minister has in the past acknowledged that the conditions at the hospital are unacceptable. It is clear that he is now committed to devoting the energy and the resources necessary to take it out of the dark ages and transform it into a modern care facility that our sickest children and their parents deserve.

"We hope to be in regular contact with the Minister, Department officials and the hospital during the next 24 months to ensure that there will be no obstacles that could delay this much needed development by as much as one day."
