Crumlin Children's Hospital - BackgroundCrumlin Children's Hospital was designed before World War II and opened in 1957 as a local hospital to serve people in the Crumlin area of Dublin. The original design team worked within tight budgets and could not possibly have foreseen the revolution that was about to occur in children’s medicine.Today, the hospital is Ireland’s main specialist centre for the treatment of sick children. It is a multi-disciplinary centre of excellence and boasts world-class doctors and nurses to whom our group is indebted. Without too much change in the hospital’s original structure and with only limited Government investment in the campus, Crumlin has become the largest paediatric hospital in Ireland. It is also one of the biggest such centres in Europe and is also the main Tertiary Care Centre for paediatric healthcare in Ireland. Crumlin is home to the following specialities: Cardiac Surgery, Cardiology, Dental Surgery, Dermatology, E.N.T, Endocrinology, Gastroenterology, General Medical, General Surgical, Genetics, Infectious Diseases, Haematology, Neonatology, Nephrology, Neurology, Oncology, Opthalmology, Orthopaedics, Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery, Child Psychiatry, Child Psychology, Physiotherapy, Respiratory/Cystic Fibrosis and Rheumatology. It also houses the National Burns Centre, the National Airways Centre and the National Centre for Medical Genetics. The hospital treats patients from all parts of Ireland and accepts patients from Northern Ireland and abroad. For many children, is the only institution in this country with the expertise required to treat their illness. Sadly, over the years, the hospital has been starved of serious capital investment and it has had to struggle with its own infrastructure to keep pace with modern healthcare demands. On behalf of our children, we call this struggle heroic. The current development of seven new operating theatres is the first substantial investment in Crumlin’s infrastructure in more than 20 years. Funding for new theatres was first requested in the 1970s. Today, the hospital urgently needs to be redeveloped. The high quality of care that our children receive in Crumlin must be reflected in a high quality environment for the delivery of that care.
